“To plant a garden is to believe in tomorrow…” Audrey Hepburn

The Floral Boutique, Isle of Wight

So here we are in week 4 of lockdown and I just wanted to put a few words together to let you know what it means for us.

The initial isolation struck us right on Mother’s Day week – usually our busiest time of the year. We had to make huge changes to our schedule in a very short space of time. With the threat of a potential lockdown we put together 4 days worth of huge piles of orders in just over 48 hours. My super duper colleagues worked so hard to ensure that our bouquets made their way to all the lovely mums across the Island just in time. Phew!

The ‘perfect storm’ of the pandemic and Mother’s Day meant that we weren’t able to take on as many orders as usual.  We even closed on Mothering Sunday (again, another first)! I am so sorry to any of our customers who were disappointed that we had to close our order book sooner than planned, but I feel that it was the safest thing to do under the circumstances.

We sold every stem and spring bulb we had in the shop before we tidied up, gave the plants a drink to keep them happy, and turned the sign to ‘closed’ on our door.

As sad as it was to shut up shop (this is the longest we’ve ever closed since we opened 14 years ago) I know that we made the right decision to protect our staff, families and all of our wonderful customers that have also become our friends. Although this is a scary time emotionally and financially, staying home, staying safe and staying positive are now key. We will come back with a shop full to the brim with flowers as soon as it is safe to do so.

A large part of our business is weddings and that is where COVID-19 has made a huge difference to our 2020 calendar. I have been in contact with all of our couples who had their weddings planned between now and July to assure them that we will fit in with their plans. All have chosen to postpone their special days and we can accommodate each one in our diary. This is such a stressful time for all couples, especially those who only had a few weeks to go, but once this is over their weddings will become even more special as an opportunity to bring family and friends together. Any brides and grooms with questions, please don’t hesitate to get in touch via email, I am here for you.

The continuing isolation means that I can personally take a step back from routine and spend time with my family. Keeping in our little bubble and enjoying the small things (as well as trying to homeschool big E and potty train little E! I obviously don’t like sitting still!).

I am desperately missing our little flower shop and all of our wonderful customers – I cannot wait to see you all when it is safe to re-open. In the meantime, I’ll continue spreading some floral love on social media so please interact should you wish, it’s nice hearing from the outside world.

Stay safe, stay at home and stay positive.

Love, Nic x
